CCCS solution: Token payments
The licensed publican of a small local pub, Bob’s financial worries started when a number of big chain rivals opened in the area.

Unable to buy alcohol cheap at wholesale prices and sell drinks for a low cost, Bob was losing customers to the other pubs in the area, which were able to undercut his prices.
As a result, Bob’s profit margins became non-existent and the 63-year old and his wife still had to meet their rent, business rates, equipment costs and maintenance bills, which were steadily increasing each year due to inflation.
“I had been a publican in the licensed trade for years. Running a pub was a job I enjoyed immensely, and the pub used to be a focal point for the local community. I made great friends over the years, and you got to know all the regulars.
“All the big chain pubs have now moved in though, and community pubs like mine are dying off. We just can’t compete. The pub was making a loss and I had no option but to close.
The couple were forced to close the pub as a result, rendering them unemployed. Finding it difficult to gain employment due to their advanced years, the couple are actively looking for new jobs, but without much success.
“Now I can’t pay my debts, something I hate not being able to do, but I can’t find a job either. Employers prefer younger people.”
Desperate to get out of the situation, Bob contacted CCCS and was advised to make temporary token payments to his creditors, on the basis that things will improve when Bob finds work. If Bob can’t find work, the CCCS are there so Bob can discuss his other options.
“CCCS have helped put my situation in perspective, and making these token payments has given me the time to try to sort a solution out. Hopefully I’ll find a job soon.”
