Although a baby is a welcome arrival, it can put a financial strain on your family.
This may be because your income is reduced or just the added costs of another mouth to feed.
If you are struggling to pay your household bills or debts you will benefit from using our online debt counselling service, which will provide you with the most appropriate solution to your debt problem. Alternatively contact our free Helpline on 0800 138 1111.
In the mean time you may find some of the following tips useful.
Benefit entitlement
Check your benefit entitlement. You will be entitled to claim Child Benefit when your baby is born and may also be able to claim additional tax credits. You can find out about maternity pay and what you are entitled to by speaking to your employer.
Sure start maternity grant
If you have a low income or receive benefits you may be entitled to a Sure Start Maternity Grant. It pays a lump sum of £500 to go towards the cost of the baby. You must apply for the grant between 11 weeks before the baby is due and up until the baby is 3 months old. As it is a grant, you won’t need to pay anything back.
