Overdrafts FAQ's

If you are finding it difficult to clear your overdraft or it is getting bigger each month, we recommend open a new basic account (without an overdraft facility) with another bank you don’t owe money to. This will help you regain control of your account.

You must then arrange to repay the overdraft with your previous bank at a monthly rate you can afford. If your overdraft is not paid back as agreed, the bank will follow their collections process. They may eventually issue a default notice and take court action.

If you are having problems paying your debts we can help you. You can use our online debt counselling service, CCCS Debt Remedy, which will provide you with the most appropriate solution to your debt problem. Alternatively contact our free Helpline on 0800 138 1111.

If you find it difficult to open a high street bank account, there are some alternatives:

  • Post Office card accounts allow you to pay in state benefits and pension. You can not pay in wages or set up any direct debits or standing orders
  • Some building societies offer instant access accounts which are suitable to use as basic bank accounts. For more information, contact the Building Societies Association
  • Some credit unions offer current accounts. Availability is limited to certain regions or jobs. Contact the Association of British Credit Unions Limited

If you have to make a complaint about an overdraft, contact the creditor themselves first.

If your complaint is not resolved within eight weeks, it can be referred to the Financial Ombudsman Service. If your complaint relates to charges added to the overdraft, it is worth contacting them for advice before beginning your complaint.
