New advertising rules have been introduced to stop fee-charging debt advice companies misleading the public about ‘free’ services.

First port in a storm
Until recently, companies have been advertising ‘free’ debt advice in order to lure unsuspecting consumers into parting with money to allow the firm to manage their debts.
We understand that when it comes to debt advice, desperate consumers might not shop around and instead opt for the first port in a storm. Commercial companies providing debt management plans have been clever at taking advantage of this and enticing customers with misleading offers of a free service.
‘Free’ advice could cost a fortune
Our research shows that clients on debt management plans with fee charging companies not only pay a high price but also take a lot longer to pay off their debts.
Many people do not expect these hidden costs, which can be as much as £5000. This is alarming considering there are free charitable services available, like ourselves.
Get free advice from a charitable service
As the UK’s leading debt help charity we welcome the changes made in the advertising rules concerning the term ‘free’ and its use. We are also glad to see new codes requiring offers of financial products to be presented in a way that can be easily understood by the audience, rather than taking advantage of consumers’ inexperience.
