Reducing spending

If you are struggling to pay your debts, looking for ways to reduce your spending is important and may help you find more money to pay your debts.

The information below gives you ideas on ways to reduce your spending.

Utilities

See if there is a cheaper utility provider in your area.  Visit price comparison websites to compare prices of gas and electricity suppliers and switch online to get the best deal.

Telephone

Look to see if you could reduce your telephone bills by switching to a better deal, for example one that offers free evening and weekend calls.

Mobiles and internet

To look for the best deals on your mobile and internet packages, visit one of the impartial price comparison sites available on the internet.

Satellite or cable TV

Contact your supplier to investigate the options available to reduce your subscription to the minimum package.  Or you could switch to a cheaper or free supplier, for example Freeview.

Vehicle expenditure

Are all the vehicles in your household essential? You could sell a car if it is not needed on a day-to-day basis.

Food, toiletries and cleaning

You could look to switching to own brand products or making use of special offers that are available in the supermarket.

Meals at work

In general it works out cheaper to take your own lunch to work each day.

FAQs

England and Wales

Most agreements allow creditors to add charges and interest. If you feel that the charges are unfair or too high, you should first make a complaint to the creditor.

Creditors can add charges, but the Office of Fair Trading guidelines state these should be “based on actual and necessary costs” and should not be too high compared with the debt itself.

If you do not get a satisfactory response, you could contact the Financial Ombudsman Service who can investigate the matter further.

You may have difficulties opening a bank account if you do not have a passport or a driving licence. Different banks will accept different forms of identification. You will need to check with the bank to find out which other forms of identification they will accept. You may have to try several different banks until you find one who will accept the identification you have.
