Helpline

One of our Helpline Advisors, Pam is part of the crucial team who provide initial advice and support to those contacting the charity for help.

What’s your average day like?

I’ve got two children so my day actually starts a lot earlier than when I come to work!  I drop them off at school and then I come to work for 9.15. I finish at 2.45 in time to pick them up which works really well for me.

My job is on the Helpline so most of my day is on the phone speaking to callers, we collect details about people’s situations to work out what the best course of action is – usually that means arranging an appointment with a counsellor. We can often put people straight through or can book an appointment time that better suits them.

Do you miss out on anything because you’re not at work full time?

No, I always get all the information I need as we have regular team briefs and updates and I still get opportunities to take on extra tasks. Recently I’ve been a coach to new starters and have been part of our Outreach project too which involves providing advice within our local community.

Did you have experience in debt advice before you started this job?

No not at all - If I knew when I was younger what I now know about budgeting my life would be completely different! I’d be a millionaire!

Can the calls you take be complicated?

People do have complicated situations sometimes but we’ve all the information we need readily available in case we need to refer to it. We can also talk through more complex situations with our colleagues. But the good thing is that our calls aren’t scripted so we have the freedom to really speak to and help people.

What are the rest of your team like?

Great! We’re similar people and are passionate about what we do. We socialise and regularly go out for lunch as a team. We have fun days to raise money for other charities as well.

What do you like most about your job?

I love that my work helps someone get a good night’s sleep. There’s a purpose to it, there’s loads of opportunity for variety and it fits around my kids. I couldn’t ask for more!
